My African Violets

As I had mentioned on the main index, I got into growing violets as an excuse to continue using my grow lights. I have a feeling that I will continue growing them for quite some time. We'll see....

I'm currently growing under two 40W flourescent fixtures, each with two four foot long tubes. Right now, I'm using only cool white bulbs, but will probably switch out one of the bulbs for a warm bulb in a ocuple of months. I haven't noticed any problems with the current setup, but more experienced growers than I recommend a mix of bulb types, and I can't see why I should assume to be any smarter than them.

I'm willing to trade for cuttings, but right now, all of my plants are very immature, so that isn't an option yet. If you see a named violet you'd like, I can let you know how I acquired it. Also, if you have nice named leaves that you can't bear to hold onto any longer, I will be more than happy to supply a mailing address for you. ;)

No name violet

A noid from Wal-mart

This is a plant I bought for $0.97, largely because of it's beautiful purple blooms w/ white edging. It hasn't bloomed since I bought it, but I have high hopes.

Aca's Red Ember

Aca's Red Ember

I really liked the dark foliage and deep color of the blooms on this variety. It seemed like it would stand out against the other violets in the light stand.

Sugar Plum Dream

Sugar Plum Dream

The blooms on Sugar Plum Dream were the main reason I picked this variety. Again, it didn't look like the standard deep purple on light green foliage violets that I had always seen before.
